Physical Therapy Q & A

Why do I need physical therapy?

Physical therapy — or PT for short — is a very personalized treatment that’s recommended to promote healing and minimize pain over time. Your physician may recommend a course of physical therapy to help you recover from:

  • Musculoskeletal issues, such as back pain or rotator cuff tears
  • Neurological conditions, like multiple sclerosis
  • Sports injuries, including ankle sprains
  • Orthopedic or podiatric surgery
  • Arthritic conditions

Physical therapy is beneficial for children, too. For instance, if your little one has developmental delays or abnormalities, physical therapy is a conservative solution to help them build strong and healthy bones and connective tissues.

What happens during physical therapy?

Your physical therapy treatment package is entirely tailored to you, based on your diagnosis and severity of your symptoms.

It’s a progressive treatment where you start out with slow and gradual exercises — or passive exercises — then work your way up to more complex movements combined with healing treatments along the way.

Depending on your needs, your physical therapy sessions at Cardio Metabolic Institute can include:

  • Ice or heat therapy
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Coordination activities
  • Therapeutic ultrasound
  • Balance and gait training
  • Manual massage or manipulation

Part of your physical therapy plan from Cardio Metabolic Institute includes personalized exercises to perform at home between your physical therapy sessions, too.

The physical therapy team can even counsel you about activity modifications you can make at work or while exercising, so you continue to recover.

How long do I need to go to physical therapy?

It depends. Because it takes time for tissues to heal, it’s important to stick to your recommended course of physical therapy. Your physician may want you to go to physical therapy anywhere from two to four times per week for at least two months.

For more complex conditions, you might need ongoing physical therapy sessions for up to six months (sometimes even longer). Your physical therapist conducts regular evaluations and can adjust your physical therapy plan as needed throughout the course of your treatment.
