Did you know 1 in 3 American adults are considered prediabetic? By delivering The Diabetes Prevention Program, an evidence-based lifestyle change program, we hope to do something about that staggering statistic. This program is proven to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by offering; a full year of support and instruction on how to eat healthy, add physical activity to your routine, manage stress, stay motivated, and solve problems that can get in the way of your goals. Participants who lost 5-7% of their body weight and added 150 minutes of exercise per week cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 58% (71% for people over 60 years old)!
You are qualified if you have never had a diagnosis of Type II Diabetes, and recent blood test with results within the prediabetes range. One of the following blood tests and results would qualify you:
- Hemoglobin A1C: 5.7–6.4% or
- Fasting plasma glucose: 100–125 mg/dL or
- Two-hour plasma glucose (after a 75 gm glucose load): 140–199 mg/dL
Diabetes Prevention is a 12 month program
During the first 4 months of the program, we will meet once a week. During the next 8 months, we will meet once or twice a month.
You may think you learned enough in the first 6 months and can skip the second half of the program. But you’d be cheating yourself!
Making lifestyle changes is an ongoing process. Staying in the program for the full year is essential to help you stick to new habits and avoid slipping back into old habits. And if you have not reached your goals in the first half of the program, your lifestyle coach and other group members can help you succeed.
There is a small monthly fee associated with this program, however for some individuals with Medicare there is no out of pocket cost at all! Contact Wellness Center staff for further clarification by calling 732-846-7000 extensions 151 or 152.
